The conductivity of copper foil is a critical factor in determining transmission loss in circuit boards. This becomes especially significant in the millimeter-wave range, where surface roughness can greatly affect conductivity, making direct measurement essential.
However, due to the lack of sufficiently capable measurement systems, it has traditionally been difficult to accurately evaluate the conductivity of copper foil on its own. As a result, engineers have had to fabricate transmission lines on actual substrates — a time-consuming process — in order to estimate losses, including dielectric loss and manufacturing variations such as etching errors.
EM labs have optimized the Fabry-Perot resonator specifically for conductivity measurements, making it possible to directly and reliably evaluate copper foil conductivity. This innovative solution dramatically improves the efficiency of developing low-loss, high-frequency circuit materials.

Recommended thickness
The maximum thickness for copper foil and metal plates is 2 mm. We recommend a thickness of at least three times the skin depth at the measurement frequency.
For copper foil with a dielectric layer, the dielectric thickness should be no more than 300 µm.
